The End of Summer Vacation

Ah, the start of September! A time when the leaves start to change, the temperature starts to cool, and the kids go back to school. A time when I can finally work during the day with limited distractions! Yea!

I have really, really enjoyed the time when the kids go back to school in the past, and this year, my now-working-from-home husband was finally truly understanding my appreciation, but since it's my oldest son's senior year I've found myself a tad introspective. He's finishing high school and it won't be long after that before everything in our lives changes drastically. My writing is stagnant as I reflect on his life at home and wonder where he'll go from here. It's a bittersweet time to be sure.

We've made a point of raising our kids to be independent and to go forth and conquer the world as they see fit, but now that my first born is near to doing just that I'm getting all sentimental. Not my usual M.O. at all. Nor do I really want to keep him home either, but I'm at that stage of wanting things to stand still while I catch up. It's an interesting and uncomfortable feeling.

I can't wait for it to be over and go back to being happy about him growing up and following his own dreams.

It was only a couple of years ago that my son graduated high school so I know what you're talking about. For me, of course, September means going back to school myself.

Whenever nostalgia sets in over a child nearing the age when they can leave, think about them still living with you at forty. I have some friends who are no longer nostalgic. :)

Charles, you give a completely different take on September, to be sure.

I have no fear of that, Bernard. My kids would move out now if they could just so they could have some space. :-) There are advantages to small houses.
