I think many writers are often very good listeners. It can be a useful skill in character and plot development.
And it keeps one from saying something stupid.

I wish I was a better listener. Dialogue is my weakness, I fear.
Charles is right. Without listening, a writer's use of dialogue will suffer. I've been lucky. I work a day-job where I don't have any choice but to listen. :)
I could read Hemingway quotes all day.
And don't forget the eyes. They can also see a great deal that writers can use.

The good news is, my deadbeat tenants are gone and they didn't destroy the place. We're hoping to have it ready to rent by March.
